Ferry, catamaran or passenger boat

Car ferry
Carries cars, campers and lorries as well as people. The slowest of the three and the cheapest; on most lines you queue at the ramp rather than hold a place.
Catamaran · passengers only
People only, no vehicles. Faster than a ferry over the same water, with fewer sailings a day, and seats can run out in July and August.
Passenger boat
People only, on the short local lines. Slower than a catamaran, and to some of the smaller islands it is the only boat there is.

Before you sail

Need a ticket in advance?

On most state lines you cannot hold a place on a particular sailing. You buy a ticket and join the queue instead. Some lines do take a vehicle reservation, and the line's own page says which.

Can I take my car?

Only a ferry carries vehicles; catamarans and passenger boats do not. On top of that, 9 islands allow no cars ashore no matter which boat you take, and the crossing page says so before you drive to the port.

Where do I buy a ticket?

On the operator's own site, or at the ticket office in the port. Bought online it arrives by email and showing it on your phone is enough. We sell nothing and take no commission.

How early should I be there with a vehicle?

In July and August the vehicle queue can be longer than one sailing takes. Where a public HAK camera watches the lanes, the port page reads how full they are and shows green, yellow or red - never a number of cars.

What if nothing sails on the day I want?

Most lines run one timetable in summer and another in winter, and the smaller islands are served on a few days of the week. Change the date at the top of any page and the board answers for that day.

Luggage and bicycles?

Hand luggage travels free. A bicycle has a fare of its own in the ferry price list; on a catamaran the space for one is limited or not offered, so ask the operator before you count on it.

How the timetables get here

Each operator publishes its lines as PDFs, and the state register (AZOLPP) lists every line there is. Those are fetched and turned into structured sailings. Every row is checked before it is published: one whose times contradict the route, or that calls at a port the line does not serve, is held back rather than shown. Where a timetable prints arrival times, the crossing duration is computed from them, because the operator's prose quotes the shortest leg and is wrong on multi-stop lines.
